Then you can open them in MidiJam and enjoy the midi visualization “on steroids.” You can then go to and download as many free midi files as you want (there’s other directories out there too, just google “midi directory”). I had a hard time figuring out how to bring a midi file of my choice into the program (…you just actually drag the midi file to the midijam.exe icon but the “readme.txt” file covers all that). It’s a little old school and not as user-friendly as I’d like but it’s decent. Same with drums, horns, strings… ANYTHING!ĭownload the program and mess around with it. If there is a bass present, you’ll see the bass plucking real notes too. So the piano plays the actual piano notes that are being heard in the midi file. It actually takes the actual instruments that are in the midi file and shows them playing REAL notes. You can even slow stuff down and transpose to any key of your choice. You just load your midi program through Van Basco and voila, the notes are displayed on your screen in a little graphical piano. It’s great for learning how to play any song, if there’s a midi file available for it on the net.
You’re probably familiar with Van Basco Karaoke, which takes your midi file and displays it on a piano screen. Such enthusiasm is not lost on me and has really given a great push to the next phase of this project.Ok, so I’m on the net and I come across this post about a free program that visualizes your midi files in a whole new way.
They not only learn the tunes, but correct my transcriptions and help with all the details to keep a group like this moving forward. I could not do any of this without all the work my others in the group have shared. The question and answer session was great. I decided at one point to ask for questions for which their were many thoughtful ones. Folks attentively listened to the tunes and some dance along. Our band for the barn raising ( minus me taking picture ) We are a welcoming group who seek out new-comers and provide tools for learning the tunes.
In general these groups have one keeper of the tunes and tradition and many players of all skill levels. The Norwegians have groups like this called Spellmanslags. I doubt that many of these tunes have been played by a group in decades. Our group gets together twice a month in Saint Paul and plays Upper Midwest Tunes. I don't want my projects to become boring archives that have no life to them. To have a group that actively plays this music I have been archiving has long been part of the mission. About 6 months ago I started a learners group called Upper Midwest Folk Fiddlers.
